I really like Jazz! All types of Jazz! I realize that there are many different sub-genres of Jazz and I am not going to get in to all of that, cause it will mostly confuse everyone. I like the old jazz with the greats and the new stuff and everything in between. If I was stuck on a deserted island and I could only have one type of music, I would pick jazz. I honestly feel that each time I listen to a jazz piece I hear something different. There are so many nuances that just come out over time. Subtle chord alterations, modes and changes that occur. The way the tones clash at times and the harmonics that resonate. It is nearly a new experience with each listen. Today I am going to pass on for your enjoyment a couple of Jazz songs from a few of my favorite musicians. I wish that I could express in words all the emotion that one Jazz song can convey. Take a little of your time...... slow down and listen to the following songs. Maybe....... just maybe you will feel a little of what I am talking about.
I have always been a fan of The Pat Matheny Group he truly is one great guitarist and composer. This song will take you to another place. It is one of many of his great songs. Even his stuff that is not that great is still better than most others.
Many of you that have been in the south may remember hearing this song on a Publix commercial. I will never forget that commercial. Not because of the commercial itself, but for the music. This song always brings about in me the emotion of the Holidays starting and great times with family...... past and present.
Most of you know Slash from Guns and Roses fame. Slash is a really a great guitarist and sometime ago released this song that played on many of the local jazz stations. It wasn't even available on an album for the longest time but it is a song that will go down as a truly great song and a showcase of the talent that Slash possesses.
If you don't know who Chuck Mangione is, I don't see how you could have lived for longer than 30 years and not have heard this song at least once. It is a song that having been heard will always transport you to somewhere else. Maybe a past memory or creating a new memory in the moment, but this song is epic in my book.
Jazz has such a wide spectrum of music encompassed in it. It is not worth battling all of the different arguments for what should be included and not. It is a spectacular genre of music and one that will grab you by the hand and take you with it. There are so many songs and artist that I could show you or introduce you to, maybe next time I will include some Django Reinhardt that guy was way ahead of his time and unique.
Well tell me what you think. Music is the universal language, and Jazz speaks in a way that is brilliant.
